Pottery Kilns at Wun Yiu in Tai Po

Wun Yiu, Tai Po was once a center of porcelain industry in the New Territories. As early as the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), clans of Man and Tse had started manufacturing the blue and white porcelain. The Ma clan, a group of Hakka people originated from Changle county in Guangdong province, settled in Tai Po and purchased the kilns from the Man clan in 1674 (the 13th year of Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty). The industry declined in the early 20th century due to the competition from good quality and inexpensive porcelain produced by other coastal kilns in Guangdong. The kilns at Wun Yiu finally ceased to operate in 1932.

Archaeological investigations at Wun Yiu discovered the remains illustrating the complete process of porcelain production such as china clay quarrying pits, water-mills, animal-driven grinder, clay soaking tanks and dragon kilns. They all are important cultural heritage of Hong Kong.

Discovery and preservation
The tomb was accidentally discovered in August 1955, when the Hong Kong Government was leveling a hill slope for the construction of resettlement buildings at Lei Cheng Uk Village (present-day Lei Cheng Uk Estate). The tomb was then excavated by members of Hong Kong University and workers of the Public Works Department, Hong Kong under the supervision of Professor F.S. Drake, former head of the Chinese Department at the University of Hong Kong. After excavation, the tomb and an exhibition hall were formally opened to the public in 1957. In November 1988, the Han Tomb was declared as a gazetted monument by the Hong Kong Government, and it is now protected and preserved permanently under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance.

Due to conservation reasons, visitors have not been able to enter the tomb itself since the mid-1980s. They now have to view it through a glass panel at the entrance passage, and the tomb is sealed in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.

The tomb, which had been protected by concrete, waterproofing layers, topsoil and turf, suffered from rainwater leakage problems and its protection underwent a renovation project completed in 2005. The renovation works included the building of a canopy to cover the tomb.

We went to Hong Kong Wetland Park on last Monday.

It is located in Tin Shui Wai, next to the greatest ecological resources- Mai Po Natural Reserve, one of the natural heritage in Hong Kong.

Although Hong Kong Wetland Park is not a heritage, it themed as a green attraction and educational outing for us to learn more about our natural heritage of wetlands.

When we arrived there, we were amused by the spectacular view of the Park. It was such a large area surrounded by green trees and blue rivers. Together with the windy and sunny weather, we all felt relaxed to start our journey.

Generally, the Park consists of three areas - visitor facilities, Wetland Interactive World and Wetland Reserve.

We began with visiting the Wetland Reserve.

There were wide range of trees and animals that we had never seen before. Let's take a brief look of what we'd seen.

Next, we went to the Wetland Interactive World, where photo-taking is prohibited. The World interacts guests by illustrating models and playing videos and games, so that we can learn much more about the characteristics of wetlands.

Overall, I really enjoy my moments in HK Wetland Park. Hardly can we experience the natural habit in our living areas, the fresh air and green environment are worthwhile to spend a morning or an afternoon there.

If you are tired of your busy life or full of pressure, I highly recommend you to go to Hong Kong Wetland Park.

Thanks Mandy for providing the photos.

Go..........
